Debrecen and its metropolitan region has traditionally strong “health industry”, including pharmaceutics, spa and health tourism, medical equipment manufacturing, organic food producing. Pharmapolis Debrecen is the cluster of local pharma industry, the University of Debrecen and Debrecen City. Pharmaceutical manufacturers like TEVA, Richter Gedeon, Actavis or Sun Pharma are running business here, employing almost 3,000 people in the local pharma industry. TEVA, the leading generics manufacturer of the world, has its main European manufacturing and R&D centre in Debrecen, and may expand this unit, doubling its capacity and thus creating the largest pill making in the whole of Europe.
Boosting international service sector in Debrecen:
In recent years, after Budapest, Debrecen became the second most relevant SSC (shared service centre) investment location in Hungary, employing approx. 2,000 people. International companies, like BT (UK), IT Services Hungary (G), National Instruments (US), Ygomi (US), GEM (UK) have appreciated the City’s labour market, office market and prices under Budapest level, and established a new industry in Debrecen. The new international service centres are running business in IT, operates multilingual contact centres, global sales support centres etc. Foreign employees with IT/financial/multilingual language skills are highly welcomed. The companies employ 10-15 people of non-Hungarian nationality each and can employ 20-25 people within 3 years. At some of these companies employees are required to speak English or other foreign languages and not Hungarian, which means that there is no limit on the number of employees of non-Hungarian nationality and speaking only foreign languages.
